Obese is the word, is the word…
Unfortunately, obesity is the main word in all the media at the moment. After the UK government’s recent report on obesity, it is now being reported that between half and two-thirds of men and women in 63 countries across five continents (excluding the US!) were overweight or obese in 2006.

Danish researchers have just completed a study of more than 14,000 responses to the 2003 Health Survey for England and have concluded than people of smaller stature appear to suffer more with mental and physical health complaints.
The report did not actually investigate the health of the individuals but based their results on the answers given during the study. The authors are interested to clarify why shorter people feel less positive about their health.
Men shorter than 5ft 4in and women less than 5ft responded with much lower well being than others. Results predicted that if men added 2.7in (7cm) to their height and women 2.3in (6cm) they would feel improved health-related quality of life of 6.1% – similar to an obese person losing 10-15kg (22-33lb) in weight!
Nutritional Supplements – An Introduction
There are many types of nutritional supplements including vitamins, minerals, and herbs. They are typically used to give your body necessary nutrients that it is lacking due to poor diet, excessive exercising, pregnancy, or the quest to lose weight.
If you have been considering a nutritional supplement, you may be overwhelmed by the amount of products on the market. You may be even more confused on the issue if you listen to the advertisements as each product out there claims to be the best. Make sure you discuss the use of nutritional supplements with your doctor. If you are taking any other medications the use of a nutritional supplement can make in ineffective, leading to additional health concerns for you.

It’s true (apparently!), garlic is good for the heart. Researchers believe they have discovered that allicin, which breaks down to into sulphur compounds causing those ‘garlic breath’ problems is the key. The compounds then react with red blood cells and produce hydrogen sulphide which, in turn, relaxes the blood vessels and allows blood to flow more easily – reducing blood pressure, allowing the blood to carry more oxygen to essential organs and reducing pressure on the heart.

Serious concerns about the future of the UK’s health are being raised with a report that suggests half the UK’s population could be obese within 25 years. That’s a serious problem and not something that government nor health services should be held accountable for. Whether it is your own health, or that of your children, family or friends, it’s time to take action NOW!
Weight management and weight loss are the responsibility of individuals. Obesity isn’t just a few extra pounds that people need to loose before going on holiday, it is seriously overweight and involves all sorts of complications to health. The study suggests that there should be “further and faster” efforts beyond existing anti-obesity measures to encourage exercise and healthy eating said Alan Johnson, Health Secretary.

Vitamin C is probably the most widely known vitamin these days. It is not surprising because the body needs vitamin C for over 300 functions. In fact, vitamin C has been proved to help protect against heart disease, cancer and other serious illnesses. Without vitamin C the body would not be able to heal itself either. This is because vitamin C is vital for the formation of collagen. Whenever a person has a cut or an injury it is the collagen that helps repair the damage and without sufficient vitamin C this would be almost impossible. Collagen has a multitude of functions in the body, including keeping the organs in place, and it would not be able to do this without sufficient vitamin C.

Do you use household cleaning sprays and/or air fresheners once a week or more?
Well, a study shows that even small use of these domestic products can raise your risk of asthma. Previously, it has been identified that heavy use of such products can cause occupational asthma but now occasional use is also considered a problem.
The risk of developing asthma increased with frequency of cleaning and the number of different sprays used. Spray air fresheners, furniture cleaners and glass cleaners carried the highest risk.

The NHS spends somewhere in the region of £16m per year on bath products (as much as 70p per bath) for the treatment of allergic eczema but researchers believe this may well be ‘a waste of money’. Allergic eczema is a condition which most commonly affects children.
Researchers suggest that there is no clinical evidence, nor concensus of medical opinion to suggest that emollient bath water products work.
The same report considers the use of topical products applied directly to the skin do benefit the condition, it says “long clinical experience has suggested that emollients applied directly to the skin are effective and safe”.
