According to Dr. Peter Atherton in his book titled The Essential Aloe Vera,
“The structure of the Aloe leaf shows the outer-rind about fifteen cell layers thick. . .
The hardness is due to the large amounts of calcium and magnesium present in it. . . .
Below the rind are vascular bundles or tubes of xylen and phloem. The xylen
transports water and minerals from the roots upwards into the leaves . . . The
phloem transports the synthesized materials down to the roots and other parts of the
leaf.”

Studies have found that there are 75 ingredients contained in the Aloe leaf. These ingredients have a variety of medical benefits. They are divided into the following categories:
• Ligin – This cellulose substance is found in the gel has no known medical properties except it posses the property of penetrating the human skin.
• Saponins – These form soapy lathers when mixed and agitated with water. They have been used in detergents, foaming agents and contain antiseptic properties.

The NHS spends somewhere in the region of £16m per year on bath products (as much as 70p per bath) for the treatment of allergic eczema but researchers believe this may well be ‘a waste of money’. Allergic eczema is a condition which most commonly affects children.

While we appreciate that there are countless illnesses and ailments that bring misery to individuals, families and friends around the world, for the month of October, the focus is on breast cancer awareness. During the past 25 years, in the UK alone, cases of Breast Cancer have nearly doubled from 20,000 to almost 40,000. This statistic may well include an increase in population but that in itself can only account for a minority of the increase.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month (BCAM) was introduced as a worldwide campaign in 1993 by Evelyn Lauder to:

• increase awareness of breast cancer
• raise funds for research into the disease
• support people affected by the disease

Today, the major breast cancer and cancer charities all over the UK continue to champion the cause every October, employing the pink ribbon – now a global symbol of breast cancer awareness.

As with all cancers, research, study and support are key to determining the cause(s) and easing the suffering of patients. In turn, funds and donations are important to the various charities that support the cause so, for our part, we’d just like to add our voice to making you aware. Usually people give to charities that are most relevant to their own experiences but please remember the statistics above – things aren’t improving yet!

Scientists at Keele University have suggested that a link may exist between breast cancer and the use of anti-perspirant deodorants containing aluminium salts.

Earlier research has suggested that the majority of anti-perspirants contain chemicals such as zirconium and aluminium that are absorbed into the body through pores whereby they react and swell and this may have been a contributory factor to breast cancer over the past 25 years. With the release of toxins from the body being blocked by anti-perspirants it was thought that over a period of years this could lead to a build up of toxins in the lymph nodes of the armpit and contribute towards changes to the breast.

The recent studies have suggested a variation on the original ideas, with laboratory tests finding that aluminium and zirconium can enter cells and cause mutations of DNA that could lead to cancerous growth and may also disrupt hormone levels.

Psoriasis

Psoriasis is generally considered incurable. However, Aloe Vera has been used to treat this condition with some success. If it doesn’t cure the psoriais, Aloe Vera can work to keep it under control. Both internal and external treatments are recommended for maximum effectiveness.

Psoriasis is a recurrent skin condition that affects around 2% of the population in the UK. In simple terms, it is only an acceleration of the usual replacement processes of the skin. Normally a skin cell matures in 21 to 28 days during its passage to the surface where a constant invisible shedding of dead cells, as scales, takes place. Psoriatic cells, however, are believed to turn over in two to three days and in such profusion that even live cells reach the surface and accumulate with the dead cells in visible layers.
