Garlic Is Good For Your Heart (if not your breath!)
It’s true (apparently!), garlic is good for the heart. Researchers believe they have discovered that allicin, which breaks down to into sulphur compounds causing those ‘garlic breath’ problems is the key. The compounds then react with red blood cells and produce hydrogen sulphide which, in turn, relaxes the blood vessels and allows blood to flow more easily – reducing blood pressure, allowing the blood to carry more oxygen to essential organs and reducing pressure on the heart.
Sadly though, in spite of the potential heart health benefits, there is currently to little evidence to support the idea that simply eating garlic will reduce development of coronary heart disease – that’s still down to healthier lifestyles through healthy eating and sufficient exercise. With a low incidence of cardiovascular disease in areas of high garlic consumption, such as the Mediterranean and Far East, eating garlic as part of a varied and balanced diet though seems to be a good idea.
